Who We Serve
We serve our Union Members
We take great pride in assisting our members and member’s families by providing an array of services and support designed to make life safer, healthier and financially secure.
Perhaps even more importantly, the dedicated work of the laborers Union since 1903 has contributed to an environment in which workers can expect certain protections on the job. The concepts of minimum wage, overtime pay, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation, family medical leave for the care of newborns or sick family members, and protections for basic civil rights have come about largely though the efforts of Labor Unions. We uphold and help play a vital role in enforcing these labor protection laws as well.
The District Council provides assistance to our affiliated Local Unions by negotiating contracts and labor agreements with our employers and facilitates pension and health and welfare funds. We promote education through apprenticeship and training programs, scholarships for family members and re-imbursement for continuing education.
We serve our Employers
The concept of labor-management cooperation has proven to be the most productive way to expand work opportunities and market share for Laborers and their affiliated contractors. For our signatory contractors, construction users or project owners, we provide assistance and information including bidding opportunities, project tracking, health & safety assistance, training and marketing.
When Laborers and employers cooperate, employers can consistently rely on increased productivity, reduced employee turnover and greater retention. Emphasis on workplace health and safety reduces job stress, lowering or eliminating accident related costs and our training programs produce the best skilled laborers second to none.
We assist our construction members with negotiating contracts, implementing fixed and mobile training programs, implementing drug testing programs, collaboration of marketing efforts to increase market share and public awareness and our continuous vigil toward safety programs.
We serve our Community
Skilled construction craft laborers build and maintain vital infrastructure, such as roads and highways, transportation systems, sewer, water, energy and other utility connections. The work we perform spurs economic development and job growth through all sectors of the economy. From the smallest town to our largest urban centers, our work projects no doubt improve the quality of life for everyone in our communites.
Laborers support a strong economy and we believe in a comprehensive policy to invest in our nation’s crumbling infrastructure. Sustained investment in our infrastructure will produce gains in prosperity, both short and long term, not only in our local communities but all across our nation. Laborers stand for a national plan to modernize our infrastructure system that will not only serve us well at home but also enable us to compete aggressively with our international trading partners.
We also support our communities through charitable activities, volunteerism and sponsorship of youth sports teams. In addition to serving our membership, we promote education through apprenticeship and training, scholarships, and re-imbursement for continuing education.
